RE: Some more questions

Hello!

1. Yes, you can add custom MIBs. To do so, just put them into
<server_data_dir>/var/mibs on management server and restart your
console. During login process, console will download any new MIBs from
server and add them to MIB browser. Default server's data directory is
/var/netxms on UNIX or installation path on Windows.

2. I'll try to summarize my reasons to start this project and benefits
of NetXMS (I may miss something, and they will not appear in the order
of importance):

a. It's very interesting to create such kind of software.
b. I don't like web UI, and I didn't find any good open source
monitoring system with native Windows UI.
c. NetXMS has modular architecture, so it can be extended easily. For
example, adding support for Oracle database takes just two days, because
database interface implemented as a module (called "database driver").
Also, you can create modules for server and agents to add functionality.
d. NetXMS offers very flexible event procesing. On my job, I have done
some HP OpenView NNM installations, and configuring granular event
processing is a nightmare.
e. NetXMS server can run on Windows - most open source systems can't.
f. We are planning to implement distributed monitoring - i.e. an
hierarchical structure of management servers, each resplonsible for it's
own part of the network.
g. We are trying to optimize system for performance - it's a problem for
many open source systems, especially written in PHP/Perl/Java/etc. For
example, server caches all necessary data in memory to minimize number
of requests to database.
h. NetXMS has portable client library, which provides uniform interface
to the system. Potentially, there can be hundreds of client
applications. For example, Windows console, Alarm Viewer, PocketPC
console, and developing web UI uses the same client library. In the
future, there can be user interface for X-Windows and various
integration tools.
i. Centralized agent upgrade and configuration - very helpful if you
have to manage hundreds of monitoring agents.

3. Feel free to suggest new features, report bugs, etc. It's a way how
the system develops - as a reaction to usage experience. You can also
use bug tracker to report bugs and request features.

Best regards,
Victor.

Subject: Re: [netxms-users] Some more questions

Hi, me again.

Now that I added the node I got my SNMP traps working, which is cool,
but still some questions:

1. Can I load custom MIBs?

2. General question, what was the motivation for creatinng NetNMX, i.e
why not use OpenNMS or other tools out there that do similar things, i.e
what sets it appart, what movitvated its creation.

3. Worried about some things, like logging is very basic, the debug log
could fill the whole disk. Anyhow, maybe someday I'll have to to
contribute some features...

Cheers,

Imran

Tnx for your answer, but I intrest how feels NetXMS for biger networks -
CPU utilization for managment server! For example server 1GHZ, 1024 RAM
, xxx Nodes , pooling interval 1min - CPU utilization 25%.

Hello!
1. To get total number of nodes and DCIs, on machine running NetXMS
server run command
nxadm -c "show stats"
It will show you total number of objects, nodes and DCIs.
Monitoring utilization of management server itself has no difference
from monitoring any other server - you can get CPU utilization, free
memory, etc. from NetXMS agent on that server. Note that object for
management server itself created automatically, and DCIs for some
internal NetXMS server parameters also created automatically.
2. Yes, NetXMS support data collection from SNMP. To collect SNMP data,
you should create DCI with origin "SNMP agent", and enter OID as
parameter (or use "Select" to select OID using MIB browser).
Best regards,
Victor

Hi,
1) I intrest the caunt of nodes on some netxms server and server
parametrs and duty - CPU, RAM .
I saw in web page : C.T.Co monitoring
* 85+ Nodes
* 600+ Data Collection Items
But can't find the server parametrs and duty.
2) Are there snmp data collection in NetXMS?
Tnx for any replay.
