gentoo install - mysql client?

Running gentoo (3.3.5 according to dmesg).

untarred 2.7 source, ran ./configure. Output ended with the message;

configure: error: Your MySQL client libraries aren't properly installed

mysql is installed. mysql.so is loaded in a couple of places. Does anyone
know what the client libraries are called? I assume they are loaded, but
netxms doesn't know where to find them.
