what you mean, "connect from agent to server"? can you describe your
setup a bit further?

a few suggestions:
*) start netxmsd in standalone mode ("netxmsd -C /path/to/config_file
standalone"), you can also add --debug-all to make it more verbose.
*) try to connect to netxmsd from a server itself: telnet 127.0.0.1 4701

a few notes on the terminology we use:

1) "server": netxmsd, core application. main functionality: connects to
agents and collect data from them into a database
2) "agent": nxagentd, application runs on monitored computers, receive
connections from "server". main functionality: gather information
3) "console": nxcon.exe (windows-only application), GUI application,
connects to server. main functionality: "server" configuration,
collected data analize.
