Title: Peer MAC learning
Post by: lukejj on May 12, 2014, 08:48:18 AM
Hello,
I have a few nodes within my network that are not showing the "Peer MAC" and other Peer details under the interfaces tab.  I was just curious as to how these details are collected.  Is it CDP (for Cisco devices - which mine are) or does the device have it's MAC address queried and then matches to a device already known in the Netxms system.  Or is it done another way?
If it's done via CDP I think I know why it's not working, but if it's not done that way, I'll need to look a bit more.
Thanks,
Luke

Hi,

to determine peer MAC address server can use information obtained from CDP, NDP, LLDP, EDP, or switch MAC address table (FDB). Also, peer interface will be set only if server knows that there only one remote MAC address on interface - so for example links to unmanaged switches with multiple hosts behind will not have peer information set.

Best regards,
Victor

Thanks Victor.
If I had a switch that had a switch interface to many routers - in my case a supplier trunk connecting to many of our customer's routers. Should the peer node on the customer's routers see the MAC of the switchport on the core equipment at our end?  I'm only seeing for one or two devices, but not the rest (30 -40 others)

Hi!

It should see as long as you have all devices in NetXMS and information about MAC addresses is there. It's hard to tell more without more detailed information (MAC address tables, topology poll results, etc.).
